Healthy House

One of my buddies is sick. She’s been bouncing around docs like a little pinball. Like any young otherwise healthy thang, she’s ready to be done with it already. The pains and tests she’s experienced lately are unusual for her, and highly unusual for someone her age.

Last winter, both her beloved kitties also fell sick quickly. Each had their own health escapades in the past (one a drooly snaggletooth, the other blind), but something unexplainable seemed to plague them both suddenly and within a doctor’s visit and two days, all kitties went to heaven.

Her pup has wasted prime backyard digging hours chilling with the vet to conquer tummy troubles and her otherwise healthy live-in boy is feeling strange discomfort too (lumping of dog and boyfriend into same sentence unintentional…).

The cherry on top of the mystery is that all of the above have occurred since she moved to her new home about a year ago. Too much is too odd here to brush off.

I’ve urged her to have her water tested, but also important for a healthy home (yet often overlooked) is indoor air quality. You can try to make your house a home with personal touches like paint and furniture to scented candles and soap, but all of these items can release toxins and carcinogens into the air. Keeping up on homeownery stuff (ie: cleaning out air/furnace filters), that I as a renting queen don’t spend much time dabbling in, is just as valuable. In fact this reminds me to ring up my landlord and check up on how often he’s cleaning out these vital home organs in my uber old mansion-apartment. No doubt I myself am breathing in ancient 1800’s air.

While it’s common to associate the spread of sickly bacteria and disease with humans, it’s tough to associate danger with your living space. After diving head first into this way of thinking at work, I’ve slowly started connecting my own dots in my day-to-day life. When it comes to making decisions on what comes in to my home, I’m trying to take a more critical approach. Sure doesn’t hurt this mindset has saved me money too.

My buddy is already doing a lot right in her home. Maybe she can pin down an environmental cause to her chaos, or maybe what’s plaguing her is out of her control. We don’t have the power to change everything, but we can manage some things; when it comes to keeping a happy and healthy living space, I’m willing to take on the extra responsibility.
